Why not try a route that’s a favourite for Ivan Basso, Vincenzo Nibali and the other champions from Team Liquigas-Cannondale during their high mountain retreats at Passo San Pellegrino? There are some seriously challenging stretches, with gradients of more than 12%, but it offers some truly magnificent scenery.
From Passo San Pellegrino you descend in the direction of Falcade, admiring the Focobon chain on your right.
At the Passo San Pellegrino/ Passo Valles crossroads you turn right and prepare to take on the Passo Valles (2031 m) to then descend through the famous fir forests known as the “Violin Forests” in the Panaveggio National Park. At the fork you turn right, continuing in the direction of the Paneveggio lake and then downhill again passing through Bellamonte to Predazzo.
At the crossroads for Paneveggio, die hards can take a short detour by turning left and taking on the Passo Rolle (1984 m). Once on top, after you’ve admired the famous Pale di San Martino, you go back down along the same road to return to the original route towards Predazzo.
From here it’s an easy ride back up the valley to Moena. At Moena you turn right and begin the climb that takes you back to Passo San Pellegrino (1919 m).
